Payments FAQ

A few answers to Frequently Asked Questions regarding making payments on this website. You may wish to check out our Membership FAQ for similar information.

How does TFN protect my financial information?

TFN uses PayPal’s services to process all payments – even those you make using credit cards without a PayPal Account. This way, TFN eliminates the need to store or maintain your credit card or banking information, except for the last 4 digits of your card or the email address associated with your PayPal Account. This protects both you and TFN from hackers and others who may wish to exploit your financial information for their own gain. It also greatly reduces stress & effort on the TFN volunteers working behind the scenes to keep this website operational, and to provide you with assistance via TFN Member Services.

How can I use PayPal without a PayPal Account?

If you wish to use your credit card without a PayPal Account, just select the “Credit Cards” option at checkout. Ensure that the billing information you enter on the checkout page matches the information on the card you intend to use and PayPal takes care of the rest without the need for you to register for a PayPal Account.

Please note: if you are signing up for Print newsletter delivery, please do ensure that your Shipping Address reflects the correct delivery address before submitting payment. It can be different from the Billing Address.

How can I make a donation to TFN?

Donations to TFN can be made via our page on Canada Helps.

How come some TFN Members can pay by cheque?

Many long-time TFN Members have traditionally paid for things like Membership dues via cheque, so that option remains available to them out of respect for their loyalty. That said, we do strongly, strongly discourage their use and ask any Members who still pay by cheque to please consider switching to PayPal for the following reasons:

  • Between Canada Post, bank holds, and TFN volunteer availability, receiving & processing your payment, and updating your records to reflect said payment, can take weeks. TFN cannot accept responsibility for any delays or disruptions caused by cheque payments.
  • Cheque payments are very volunteer-intensive. Two to three volunteers are required to handle each cheque we receive, whereas PayPal payments are automatic and virtually effortless. The less time these volunteers have to spend handling cheque payments, the more time they have available to handle other things.
